WHAT MAKES A SECURITY DOOR SECURE?

The term “security screen door”, is not a term that’s allowed to be used without passing stringent tests. While a door or fly screen may look like a security door, it can’t be called a security door if it hasn’t met the Australian Security Door Standards.

WHAT ARE THE AUSTRALIAN SECURITY DOOR STANDARDS?

Australian Standard 5039-2008 is the leading Australian standard for security doors. This standard uses the AS 5041-2003 Methods of Test – Security screen doors and window grilles.

WHAT KINDS OF TESTS MUST SECURITY SCREEN DOORS PASS?

Knife Test: The knife test involves attempting to puncture the screen by applying mechanical force with a heavy-duty knife. The door is attacked three times, each time with a new blade. If the knife fails to make an incision no greater than 15cm, the product passes the test.

Impact Test: think of this as testing to see whether the door will survive a physical attack. A pendulum weight, generating 100j of impact force, is set to hit a specific point of the security door. If the impact fails to breach the material and no mesh comes away from the frame, the security door passes the test.

Jemmy Test: The Jemmy test is performed to simulate an intruder using a lever to get through a security door. This test wedges a lever in between the door and the door frame in an attempt to remove the security doors and allow someone to get past the door. If the door stays closed, it passes the test.

Pull Test: The pull test simulates an intruder trying to pull the screen door out. This test is only performed if the Jemmy test opens a large enough gap.

Probe Test: The probe test attempts to imitate an intruder trying to make a gap in the screen big enough to fit their hand through and unlock the door from the inside. A force of roughly 150kg is applied on either side of the opening. It passes the test if the space doesn’t grow enough to allow a hand through.

Shear Test: The shear test simulates someone attacking the screen door with cutting pliers. It uses a tool to increase the pressure until the sample strand (used to measure the strength of the screen door mesh) breaks.
